About Japanese Language Education Program

Hitotsubashi University Japanese Language Education Program offers a total of over 70 different courses per year, at Beginner, Intermediate Low, Intermediate, Pre-Advanced, Advanced Low, and Advanced High levels (click here for a list of the courses offered, classified by level). The Japanese Language Education Program is aimed at degree-seeking international undergraduate and graduate international students, exchange students, Japanese Studies Students (MEXT students), and research students (click here for a list of the courses offered, classified by student attributes). The Japanese Language Education Program consists of three groups of courses: (1) Global Education Courses (Hitotsubashi Global Education Program/ HGP), (2) General Education Courses (GE), and (3) Courses offered by faculties.

Degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate international students, exchange students, Japanese Studies Students (MEXT students), and research students who wish to register for the Japanese Education Program must, after arriving in Japan, take the placement test held in the orientation.

(1) Global Education Courses (Hitotsubashi Global Education Program/ HGP)

Intensive Japanese Language Education Programs of between 2 to 5 class periods per week are offered, with a focus on students who have not previously studied Japanese.

(2) General Education Courses (GE)

Intermediate to advanced-level courses are offered which develop the Japanese language ability necessary to study at university, with separate courses for each skill.

(3)Courses offered by faculties

Courses are offered in the specialist Japanese language needed for study in the field of social sciences.
